On a course in Manchester recently, we discussed various tactics that proposal managers can adopt to secure the commitment of oft-reluctant subject matter experts.

I presented lots of ideas, borne out if years of experience. Participants shared their own tips. But one, Ros, won hands-down for the best suggestion ever:

Anyone else ever bribe their contributors to co-operate with home baking?!

Our senior manager uses goodies to bribe US, her proposal writers…

Beer. The first technical contributor to submit their portion of the proposal received a case of beer… I am in Canada, after all!

Like others, I am often bribed. Memorable “gifts” include a $400 spa gift card, a gift card to Coach, etc.

Bribe away… Use whatever keeps people motivated, engaged, and smiling.

10am (or earlier) bacon butties are also a good way of getting the team in each day, I’ve found.

If you want folks to show up for an early morning meetings, Krispy Kreme doughtnuts are usually pretty fool proof incentives.

And I’ve found homemade gingerbread especially effective in encouraging reticent technology nerds.
