Work / life imbalance?

A participant in a meeting I was running recently picked up a message during a break. She looked excited, and turned to her friend: “We’ve got an extension – until first thing on Monday”.

The slightly scary thing was that this was at 10.30 on the Friday morning. Oh well: there goes the weekend…

The sad thing is that it’s rather presumed by many salespeople that we proposal folks will merrily work 24/7 to get their documents out of the door. And the sadder thing, perhaps, is that many of us do.

It is sad that Sales people believe that proposal folk will work 24/7 and they believe that we’ll produce quality at the same time!

But isn’t it sadder that this client (and many I have worked for in the past to) also believe that none of us have lives outside of responding to their proposal and consequently have nothing better to do with our weekends!

I’ve lost count of how many times my colleagues have rung me at work at 8.00pm fully expecting me to still be at my desk.

And, quite often, I’m there to pick up the call….
